    Baroness Sally Morgan

    Chair

    Baroness Sally Morgan took up her role as Chair of CUH in January 2025. Sally is also Master of Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge, sits on the University Council, is a Director of Cambridge University Health Partners, is Chair of Labour Together and has been a Member of the House of Lords since 2001. Sally was latterly Deputy Chair of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) and prior to that was Chair of the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust. She previously served in Tony Blair’s government as Minister of State in the Cabinet Office, Political Secretary to the Prime Minister and Director of Government Relations at 10 Downing Street. She has been Chair of OFSTED, a board member of the Olympic Delivery Authority for the London 2012 Olympic Games and a board member of a number of businesses and charities.

    Nicola Ayton

    Chief executive

    Nicola was appointed Chief Executive from April 2026. She first joined Cambridge University Hospitals in 2018 and was appointed to the role of Deputy Chief Executive in 2024. Prior to that Nicola was our Chief Operating Officer for four years having previously been the Executive Director of Strategy and Major Projects. Nicola has held senior national roles at NHS England including leading on strategy and delivery for New Care Models and the development of Integrated Care Systems. She has also worked in the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit at No 10 Downing Street where she acted as an expert adviser on integrated health and care. Prior to that Nicola worked as a Senior Policy Adviser in central Government at HM Treasury and the Department of Education. She started her career at Deloitte after graduating from the University of Oxford.

  • Beth Hughes

    Chief Governance and Performance Officer

    Beth was appointed Chief Governance and Performance Officer in 2026. Beth joined Cambridge University Hospitals in 2020 and has held a number of senior leadership roles, initially as Director of Operational Strategy and subsequently as Director of Delivery before being appointed as the Interim Chief Governance and Performance Officer in 2025. Prior to joining CUH, she held senior operational roles in other NHS acute trusts. She has also held national roles in NHS England’s New Care Models Programme and within the Department of Health and Social Care, having started her career in EY’s Healthcare Consultancy team. Beth leads on the Trust’s performance and analytics functions, bringing these together alongside the Corporate Affairs portfolio to strengthen accountability, assurance, and delivery.

  • Claire Stoneham

    Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer

    Claire joined CUH in June 2020 from the Department of Health and Social Care, following a secondment in to the role of executive programme director for the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough STP. During a 15 year career, her national roles included the director of provider efficiency and performance, covering NHS performance standards, hospital discharge, efficiency savings and cost recovery; and principal private secretary to the Secretary of State for Health. Claire is responsible for the Trust’s strategy, including how we work with partners across the Integrated Care System and on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, and for the programme of major projects under the Addenbrooke’s 3 umbrella, including the Cambridge Children’s and Cancer Research hospitals.

  • David Wherrett

    Chief People Officer

    David Wherrett is the Trust’s Chief People Officer, joining CUH in April 2014. He leads on all aspects of the Trust’s workforce agenda including human resources, staff health and wellbeing, medical staffing, learning and development, temporary staffing and volunteering. David has worked in human resources for over 20 years in various organisations. He has spent the majority of his recent career in the NHS, working primarily in hospitals. His focus is to ensure that CUH supports its staff to deliver excellent care for patients and carers.

  • Dr Sue Broster

    Chief Medical Officer

    Dr Sue Broster is Chief Medical Officer at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH), Responsible Officer for the Trust, and a Consultant Neonatologist. She provides executive leadership for clinical quality, patient safety, medical governance, research and education across one of the largest and most digitally advanced NHS trusts in the country. Together with the Chief Nurse, Sue holds Board-level accountability for Maternity and Neonatal Services, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality care for women, babies and families. Prior to becoming Chief Medical Officer, Sue served as Executive Director for Innovation, Digital and Improvement at CUH, leading a wide range of transformational programmes to improve patient care and clinical outcomes. Her work has included the development of the Trust's digital health strategy, implementation of large-scale quality improvement programmes, expansion of virtual care initiatives, and the establishment of innovative regional healthcare partnerships. Sue has extensive experience leading complex change across healthcare systems and has worked closely with academic, industry and NHS partners to develop innovative approaches to healthcare delivery. She played a key role in establishing the East of England Specialist Services Provider Collaborative and in the development of the East of England Paediatric and Neonatal Decision Support and Retrieval Service (PaNDR). As Chief Medical Officer and Responsible Officer, Sue is committed to fostering a culture of safety, continuous improvement and compassionate care, ensuring that patients and families receive the highest standards of care while supporting innovation, education and research to improve health outcomes for future generations. This aligns with her executive responsibilities for medical governance, clinical outcomes, research and development, education, clinical networks, and professional standards for the medical workforce.

  • Laura Churchward

    Chief Delivery Officer

    Laura is Chief Delivery Officer at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH). Laura provides extensive board-level experience in operational and strategic leadership. Prior to joining CUH, she served as Site Chief Executive at University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN), leading both Northampton General Hospital and Kettering General Hospital as part of a wider group. Before joining UHN, Laura spent 23 years at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) in a variety of operational and strategic roles, latterly as Director of Strategy, where she led the commissioning and construction of two major new hospitals. Throughout her career, Laura has led strategic change, operational improvement and service transformation. She has a strong track record of building high-performing cultures and working collaboratively with clinicians, front-line teams, academic partners and colleagues across the wider health and care system to improve services and outcomes for patients. The Chief Delivery Officer plays a vital role within our executive team, overseeing both the strategic direction and day-to-day operational management of services, as well as the delivery of high-quality care for patients.

  • Lorraine Szeremeta

    Chief Nurse

    Lorraine joined Cambridge University Hospitals as Chief Nurse in July 2018, coming to the organisation from University College London Hospitals, where she had worked as Deputy Chief Nurse for the surgery and cancer board for 5 years. During her time in London she also worked on a part time seconded basis on the pan London Capital Nurse programme, leading on retention workstreams. Lorraine has held a number of senior management and nursing roles throughout her career in a number of different organisations, and has a keen interest in staff development and organisational culture. She is co chair of the Shelford Group’s Safer Nursing Care Tool Steering Group and a member of the NHSI Safe Staffing Faculty Steering Group. She is a visiting professor for London South Bank University and a Florence Nightingale Scholar.

  • Mike Keech

    Chief Finance Officer

    Mike has been the Chief Finance Officer of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) since November 2020, having previously worked as Director of Finance at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Prior to that, Mike held a number of roles at Monitor (now NHS Improvement) with a focus on supporting organisations and systems to develop long term plans to ensure financial sustainability. Mike originally trained with the accountancy firm Deloitte and is member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. In his role at CUH Mike leads on financial aspects of the Trust’s work, including the development of the Trust’s financial plans, financial reporting, the Trust’s commercial strategy and procurement.

  • Sarah Jensen

    Chief Digital and Infrastructure Officer

    Sarah joined CUH from Barts Health NHS Trust, where she was Chief Information Officer. In that role, she led the strategic direction of the Informatics team and delivered major transformation and improvement programmes across the Trust and the NHS North East London Integrated Care System. She brings extensive experience in digital and clinical systems, technology integration and large-scale transformation, with a strong track record of leading complex change at scale. Prior to her NHS leadership career, Sarah spent 12 years in financial services, working with Fortune 500 organisations on global assignments based in London. At CUH, Sarah is responsible for leading the Trust’s digital and physical infrastructure, including technology, buildings, estates and facilities, supporting the delivery of high-quality care through modern, integrated systems and environments.

    From 2019 to 2023, James was co-chair of the Cambridgeshire South Care Partnership, the umbrella body bringing together all agencies from within the health, local authority and voluntary sectors with the intention of providing better and more integrated services for local residents. From 2018 to 2022, he served as a Board Member for the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Sustainability and Transformation Partnership. James qualified in medicine from the University of Oxford in 1990, after pre-clinical studies at the University of Cambridge. He also has a degree in law. He is an elected member of the Cambridge Local Medical Committee, has been a senior clinical tutor for the University of Cambridge and is a past president of the Cambridge Medical Society.

    John is a Non-executive Director and Vice Chair of Marshall of Cambridge (Holdings) Ltd, an engineering and property company, and of ICE Benchmark Administration, which publishes financial benchmarks. He is also a senior adviser to XMS Capital, a Chicago-based investment bank, and an investor in several fintech companies. He is a Development Fellow of University College, Oxford, a mentor to postgraduate students at Oxford University's Blavatnik School of Government and a co-author of "Public Net Worth: Accounting, Government and Democracy", a 2024 book about public finances. John was born and brought up in Cambridge and since 2016 has lived in south Cambridgeshire.

    As Group Human Resources Director of ITV Plc until 2009, Philippa shaped the consolidation of the regional ITV companies. Prior to that she held general management and then HR roles in Granada Group Plc. Philippa began her career in marketing with ICI and has an MA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from The Queen’s College Oxford. Philippa has been Chair of the NHS Pay Review Body, a Non-Executive Director of HMRC, Deputy Chair of AQA and of City, University of London.

    Rosalind is Vice President (Clinical) of the UK's Academy of Medical Sciences from 2023-2027. She is Trustee of the Medical Research Foundation and The Lister Institute. She is a member of the Board and Scientific Advisory Group of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Diseases Research, Bangladesh. She was awarded CBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours 2015, for services to the regulation of medicines for children. She graduated in medicine from Clare College, Cambridge and University of London and trained in paediatrics in London, Cambridge and Liverpool. Rosalind has been appointed to a three-year term of office by the CUH Council of Governors following a competitive recruitment process. She took up the position on 8 September 2025.

    Non-Executive Director

    Currently, Rohan is a non-executive director for the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass). Rohan is a lay member of the Independent Reconfiguration Panel (an advisory non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department of Health and Social Care), and Vice-Chair of the Bar Standards Board’s Independent Decision-Making Body. Rohan chairs NHS Mental Health Act hearings and also chair fitness to practice hearings for Social Work England. Rohan is an independent member for the Greater London Authority and the Boundary Commission for England.
